End Times Khaine progress

I've had a chance to read through some of the ET:K stuff I bought the other week and thought I'd share my thoughts. The novel by Gav Thorpe was good if not excellent - there was a very sudden conclusion after a protracted build up and it leaves lots of questions left unanswered, chief among them is how are all these Elves going to get along in the forest? I can't see that ending well...I put my copy up on eBay after I'd read it (as I do with most of my BL books) hoping to get my money back, it's currently going for twice what I paid for it, at this rate it'll get me a free Tyrion!

End Times: Khaine Review

I was/am one of the lucky few who were able to get a copy of the ET:K hardback. Last Friday I was constantly clicking refresh on the GW site from around 1900 until they came up at 1934(it) and managed to get in quickly. I hear they sold out in under 5 minutes…

New Blood Angels

This pic was doing the rounds on my Twitter feed earlier today, looks like the rumoured Blood Angels releases are confirmed!

From the cover I guess we can also confirm that it will be a tyrannid vs blood Angels box which is great as I've got the new Space Hulk too!

Warhammer Fantasy Role Play

As of Monday (3rd November) I'm taking part in a WFRP campaign at my local geek club. This is the first time I've played this system and only the second time I've played a paper RPG (I had a go at Pathfinder Society a couple of weeks ago with a Half-Elf ranger.) so this is very much new territory for me. The chairman of the club no less is running the Leichmaster campaign for myself and 4 others, I'm quite looking forward to it though I swore I'd never get into this sort of thing (I'm re-drawing the line at fancy dress!). I managed to pick up a copy of the rule book for a measly £7 on eBay, it's well used but that's fine.

Everything was generated from scratch, the only choice I had was race. This process was itself quite interesting/exciting/nerve wracking. A couple of bad rolls and my character could have been an absolute dud. As it was I've got an Elven Mercenary called Torhile (or 'Torchlight' as Autocorrect kept trying to put in - this is going to be my Common name) and she's got a fairly good stat line for a level 1 character (see below). I'm teaming up with a Dwarven Engineer (grudges ahoy!) Human smuggler, Human student (wizard) and Halfling pickpocket so it should be an interesting mix. We will be doing it every other week and I'll keep you posted as to how we go.

X-Wing battle reports

This post is a summary of last night's X-wing practice missions. I had 2 games against arguably the club's best player and whilst one list got decimated, the other managed to claim victory.

X-Wing Tournament List

My local gaming club is having a 6 game X-wing tournament over the next 2 weeks. Each game will last 45 minutes and it's a who-kills-the-most-points-wins format.

I've spent a long time procrastinating over lists and have come up with 3 that I would like your thoughts on....

The Missing Fulgrim Model

Yesterday I was flicking through my archive and I found this little gem from the 2013 HH Weekender. I remember asking the designer at the time what this was about and he said that it would be released at some point in the future - probably. It's a cool model and I think I prefer it to the one they actually released. Hopefully it'll make an appearance some day though I'm not holding my breath!

With this being a FW WIP, I wonder what else they've got in the back of their workshop...

Horus Heresy: Coming in 2015

Konrad Kurze, the next Primarch (Christmas?)

Squat spotted at Warhammer Fest!

Warhammer Fest!

My buddy and I have said fair well to our wives and are heading to Coventry for the first day of Warhammer Fest. I'm not sure what to expect in all honesty, I went to Gamesday 2012 and the 2013 HH Weekender and I have a sneaking suspicion it'll be halfway between the two.

Whatever the result I'll be posting regularly on here today with new release pics, talk summaries and spoilers as and when I find them!

Also, breakfast...

Warhammer Fest and Raven Guard First Company

Who is going to Warhammer Fest? Anyone? I've got a ticket but I've only found two others On the interweb who are going and both of them have Sunday tickets.

Dystopian Wars pt.2

My journey into Dystopian Wars continued this week, I bought the Covenant of Antarctica Battle Group and spent the last few days of my holiday painting them up. I'm really pleased with my paint scheme and though I could spend longer refining them etc, the standard at the club (which ranges from fair to good) means that they fit in with the rest of what is on show.
Here is my total fleet:

Dystopian Wars

Dystopian Wars: First Impressions

Last week I had my first game of Dystopian Wars at my local gaming club. It was a lot of fun if a bit clunky to begin with as we were constantly referring back to the rule book. However, once we had sussed out the core mechanics it started to flow, we both agreed that after another couple of games the turns would be resolved fairly quickly and you could finish a good sized game in under 2 hours.

Broadening Horizons

Recently I have started going to my local gaming club night, I've always been wary of such things in the past, largely through fear of bumping into some of my students - I try to keep the dice geek side of me away from my classroom for reasons of sanity but this one is sufficiently far away for this not to be a problem.

The new daddys of Kill Team

I have managed to get my local gaming club into a bit of Kill-Team which is great news for me as it's my favourite way to play 40K. Last week I ran a Tau infantry list (7 warriors, 4 Pathfinders - 1 ion rifle- and a specked up XV8) and won convincingly, this week I'm taking my battleship list and am hoping for similar success. However, I don't believe Tau are the way forward in Kill Team, that award goes to....Tempestus Scions! Here's why...

Marius Gage takes to the field

It's the summer break now which is a great time to get out and enjoy the sunshine, especially as a live 10 minutes from the beach... it is also the best time of year to get some hobby done as I am home alone for most of it.

So in the last two weeks I've managed to paint up a lot of my Dark Angels, Angron and started sorting through my Warriors of Chaos. I've also finished off a couple of HH books (of note: Vulkan Lives - bit confusing but not bad) and am now re-reading Know No Fear to get my back into my 30k Ultramarines - I also have Unremembered Empire sat on my bedside table to keep the enthusiasm going.

The Money Pit

After my first week of playing X-wing at my local GC I went out and bought the Imperial Aces expansion. Soontir Fel had performed so well I thought I'd make a squadron of Elite interceptors. This was a great plan but unfortunately both my new ships were 1-shotted in turns 2&3 by Han Solo (what was particularly gauging was it was my Falcon the opponent was using!). It would appear that I've stumbled onto the big puzzle in X-wing - how to kill the Falcon.

First games of X-wing

Last night I went to my local gaming club for the first time (nice bunch of people) and played my first ever competitive games of X-wing. Both games were a lot of fun, the first was a doubles match  where I had Vadar (Cluster missiles, determination, munitions failsafe) and Soontir Fel (PTL, Shield) while my partner had a monstrously kitted out Phantom that would allow it to do all sorts of shenanigans. We faced off agains an X-wing, Z95 (Blount), E-wing, B-Wing and an X-wing (Biggs). After all the boasting about the lethality of the Phantom, it got ion cannoned and torn to pieces by turn 4, Vadar and the Interceptor danced about a bit and got a few things down to 1 or 2 hull points but couldn't make a killing blow.

Getting my BFG fix

I really enjoyed Battlefleet Gothic when it was about. I've still got a copy of the rulebook at my parent's house and I'm really gutted that it's no longer supported by GW. Although there are rumours of a reamergance at some point I'm not holding my breath and am looking for an alternative to get my spaceship fix.

I've heard rave reviews about X-Wing, I had the original PC game and this looks like a lot of fun. The other option is Firestorm Armada by Spartangames, I saw these in my FLGS and they looked pretty cool. It's more of a fleet based game where as XW is more a squad based thing and I'm not sure which one I'm leaning towards at the moment. If you've had any thoughts on either of the systems please let me know, similarly if you have any alternative suggestions to these two.

Airbrush dramas

I think I've broken my airbrush...initially I was having some dramas getting a decent flow of paint out of the gun, it was coming out very thick and watery, I stripped it down and gave it a thorough clean but once I put it back together the hose connector wasn't sitting right and I either got shit loads of pressure or next to nothing. This is a pain as I'd spent the previous day building a load of Witch Elves for my AoP board (the local store assures me it is on this year) and I now have to paint them all manually...balls. I spent a lot of money on my airbrush (Badger 105 Patriot) and it's been very sporadic. When it works it's brilliant but half the time it's just a nuisance.

I've got in touch with the manufacturer and am hoping they'll help me out. I've heard good things about them so here's hoping!

Destiny: first look alpha impressions

I do t do this very often but I thought I'd share my thoughts on my experience with Destiny on PS4.

I was lucky enough to get a first look alpha code from bungie this weekend and so far I'm impressed. The gameplay is fluid and tactical, the animations are crisp and the music is very atmospheric. It's Halo Jim, but not as we know it.

The character customisation is a lot more involved and no longer just superficial which is encouraging news.

My main gripe is that the HUD is very basic, it's like a cheap version of iOS 7. The game is also quite dark, even on high brightness settings. I'm going to be streaming some gameplay on Twitch over the weekend, keep an eye out on my twitter feed @calthburns for start times.

Destiny is looking good people.

Armies on Parade 2014

Last year I entered AoP for the first time and won gold at my local store with my Celestial Lions advancing into a canyon. The board was based on the short(ish) story Blood and Fire by ADB, it was a lot of fun to build and I enjoyed adding some little touches to try to get it to marry up with the book.

This year I'm planning on doing a Dark Elves board based on the city of Har Ganeth as described in the Black Library book Warpsword. Given my limited talent for miniature scale architecture I'm not sure I fancy tackling the inside of the city but there is a great description of the white marble walls stained with bloody hand prints and the vast entrance way with a leering dragon's head - at least I think that's right, I might need to check...

My Dark Elf army is a good size and already painted to match the colours and livery of Har Ganeth, all that's missing are a troupe of Witches to really set it in place. Good thing I've ordered some then! The rough plan is to build the entrance and walls on a raised slope with a road leading in which is lined with piles of skulls. The infantry and cavalry regiments will be lined up outside the city on movement trays but the Witch elves will be streaming out of the city entrance behind a Cauldron of blood. Along the walls will be some archers and if the dragon head is in the book I'll carve one from foam and make it' sees glow with witch fire...and possibly smoke depending on how technical I'm feeling (there won't be any smoke...)

I'd love to convert the cauldron so it glowed red but until I get the model I won't know how feasible that is. If anyone out there has used LEDs on their models before, how did you go about it?

Also, if you guys are doing AoP this year, what are your plans?

Horus Heresy Book 4 thoughts

Book 4: Filler

Last year I went to the Horus Heresy Weekender and had a great time, they teased loads of releases and shared their vision of the future of this side-project. At the time I remember thinking 'they'll get ahead of themselves if they're not careful' and I think that might have come true.

Keeping my Dark Angels

I recently had a bit of a deliberate reality check and took stock of my collection before eventually deciding on selling off a few of my smaller armies to raise some money for either some Wood Elves or Imperial Guard. As a result I've sold my Grey Knights and Chaos Space Marines, neither of which I had a codex for or any particular urge to get one (though I did keep my Dreadknight and old edition metal terminators which I've had for over a decade now!). I initially put my Dark Angels up for sale too but about a day before the auction was due to close, and despite having 11 watchers (but no bids!) I had a change of heart and decided to keep my little green men.

As a result of this decision I am once again in possession of the following:

Sammael
Terminator Captain
5 terminators
2 tactical squads
Rhino
Land speeder
5 bikes
Ravenwing command squad

My question to you guys is - where do I go from here? Any advice or recommendations would be appreciated!

Enjoy the bank holiday and happy Sith day

Do we really need a 7th edition right now?

According to the rumour mill, which admittedly needs to be eyed with a good degree of suspicion, a new edition of 40k is immanent. Now I don't really have a problem with this, but the question I need to ask is, do we really need it?

Yoymart.com

I was flicking through some blogs today and noticed someone had bought some epic scale Thunderhawks from a website in china called yoymart.com, I went over for a look and they have tons of GW/FW stuff at amazing prices, for example

Ferrus Manus - $18
Fellblade - $105
Darkstrider -$9
FW Loken -$9.60
FW Avatar - $33

All seemingly too good to be true, not being a sucker, I was skeptical so did some research on forums, surprisingly the general consensus seemed to be that the stuff was fairly good quality, bit of extra flash here and there but otherwise solid kits. I was wondering if anyone here has dealt with them and how it went?

Presumably they can get away with this blatant copyright infringement because no one in China gives a shit about copyright (just ask BMW), I think I'll order something cheap (Ferrus?) and see what happens, that way if I get pinged for import duty it'll only be a couple of pounds.

Could be the start of a very interesting phase in my hobby life...

Dark Elves vs Empire

Today my local GW had an adults WHFB day and I went down to get a game in with my (now completed) Dark Elves. It was a 1,000 point game and I took the following:

A Rebranding Exercise

It was coming, we all heard the rumours that the Imperial Guard were being renamed and despite the cries of the masses it went ahead. I have no real opinion on the matter, I don't think it will translate to the table top - long term 'guard' players are unlikely to alter their semantics and I doubt new players will either ("Astra Militarum? Oh, you mean Imperial Guard"). My bigger question is 'What was the point?'

WoC and HH3

This morning Forge World put up pre-orders of HH3 Extermination, I'm surprised they did this as the shipping date isn't until MAY 1ST!!! I presume this is a run time on printing the right amount but still, it's not like these things aren't going to sell...at least it gives me something to look forward to.

The boss and his lackeys turn up

The buy-an-army-bit-by-bit-on-ebay is off to a flying start. In addition to the discounted knights, warriors and army book, yesterday I managed to bag a new fine cast Archeon the Everchosen (£18) and 20 marauders on sprues (£9) meaning a total saving of about £26 - boom!

In other news my credit limit has just been raised by £3k so I'm thinking Titan or thunderhawk???

Listen, it's the call of Chaos...

Next month marks the end of my local store's Tale of Gamers project. As some of you may know, I've been collecting 250 points of Dark Elves since November and have only got another 20 Warriors left to do before they are finished. I've enjoyed this project, doing a small amount each month has been manageable and forced me to be a bit more sensible about my spending. What I'm going to attempt next is going to be a bit different...

Eldar airbrushing binge

I had a bit of free time over the weekend and went on a bit of an airbrushing spree. My target for this month is to get my Eldar done. All of them. To that end I finished my 3 tanks, my farseer and a guardian defender squad. I also undercoated a squad of Dire Avengers and my Striking Scorpions.

Inquisitor Kill-Team

I've said it before but just to be clear, I love kill-team. Sadly my Raven Guard team (with whom I've had mixed success) are now too expensive to field thanks to the points increase on the razorback...so I've started from scratch. I've come up with a crisis suit list for Tau using the Farsight Enclaves' XV8s as troops' FOC change and some ranger/striking scorpion based shenanigans for the Eldar. However, I was flipping through the new Codex: Inquisition and have written up a henchmen list which is as follows...

Lucius the Eternal Librarian

I've gone for an unconventional finish on this one, I've got some Emperor's children knocking about in a box and they are all in purple (heresy era style) and I figured my Lucius needs to be too. Anyway, here he is.

Eldar Tanks

Last weekend I went on a bit of an airbrushing spree with some wood elves, I had a battle force sat in a box for the past...2 years which I've now built and base coated. Whilst doing that I noticed my Eldar grav tanks looking forlorn on the bottom shelf so I've decided that they will be my project now the Inquisitor's tank is just about finished.

I've tried for a Mymeara look with some limited success. Blending the paints together is still a skill I need to learn, I've got a Badger airbrush but I'm still wuss ing that out, it absolutely chugs paint and I have no idea why. If anyone else has a similar problem and or a solution please let me know - restocking is getting expensive!

Anyway, here is the progress so far, I just need to zap the cockpits and I'm done.

I am actually really pleased with the blending and OSL on the fire prism's weapon

Oh, and here are some of the finished Wood Elves, not my best but they'll do for the table top.

The £5 Wargamer challenge

This has been doing the rounds on Twitter at the moment (I'm @calthburns btw...) but the idea is to buy a mini off ebay for £5 or less (not including postage), paint it, convert it etc and then resell it. The winner is the person who can make the most profit. The idea is to give the money to charity though honestly I think you'd probably be better off just giving £5 to charity...anyway, I'm game!

I lost out on a few bids on some special characters and even a leman Russ (£6.25 grrr) but I did get a full squad of metal Catachans for £4.27 and some Dark Elf Black Guard for bang on £5. I'm not sure of the elves will turn much profit but I think the Catachans will. Oh, and you need photographic evidence of your purchase and sale.

The deadline for the project is 31st March and I encourage you to get involved!

I'm an Inquisitor and I'm borrowing your vehicle...

So the wedding was a huge success and we are home without incident. Thankfully my new wife is still letting me be a geek and as such I've started retasking a Carcharodon Land Raider for my Inquisition. I've not done anything drastic to the superstructure but I've added a lot of iconography from the Grey Knights kits and some of the street lights from various scenery buildings. The biggest conversion is the cupola where I've built an inquisitorial henchmen reading from a vast tome, the book itself is from the Vampire Counts Coven Throne whilst the henchman is scrap Space Marine bits with a Grey Knight head.
