With the 8th Ed bug having bitten me pretty hard I've made a concerted effort to get my Eldar painted. Above represents a fair few evenings assembly. The Cobra was an eBay purchase, I have a sneaking suspicion it's china cast but I really can't say for certain, it's superbly detailed and not brittle/smelly but I'm not sure...if it is it was accidental on my part.
I've subsequently airbrushed the colour onto them and I think Vallejo must have adjusted the colours because it's paler than the last bottle I bought...3 years ago. Never mind.
This is my pile of 36 Harlequins I still have to build. I'm honestly considering selling half of them because it's too daunting a prospect!
This is what I have completed thus far, I also have a Solitaire and another Shadowseer already painted, in total it's about 100PL Battalion army.
I've still got a week of the holidays left so I'm going to try and get some more garage time so I can airbrush more things, that Cobra for instance...

So last club night my mate and I ran through a game of 8th edition 40K and we both agreed it was really good.
It was only a 30PL game but we tried to use an array of units to give us a sense offs they play. As mentioned in an earlier post I ran Craftworld Aeldari with a Farseer, Warlock, Rangers, Guardian Squad, Striking Scorpions and a Wraithlord. My opponent fielded his Dark Angels and had a full tactical Squad a, terminator Squad and a terminator Librarian.

This coming Friday I'm hoping to get to play a small game of 8th edition. "7th edition" was a dirty phrase at our club and so it was almost never played - to be fair though our local GW had their club night on at the same time as ours and it was always heaving, people just went there instead - but there are several people willing to give 8th a go.
The plan is to put out a 30 power level game between Aeldari and Space Marines. I've chosen the following lists to allow us to experiment with most aspects of the game:

Last club night we played some LOTR, I've already discussed my options and the set up for the games but here are the two armies I used:
For the 500 point game I used The Glittering Host Army List originally published in White Dwarf but updated in the Free Peoples source book. It's essentially the armoured forces of Lothlorien, like the ones who turned up at Helm’s Deep, it consisted of:
- Celeborn, King of Lothlorien (heavy armour, Elven blade and shield)
- 4 Galadhrim knights with Elven blades and shields Warriors with bows
- 4 Galadhrim Warriors with spears and shields
- 3 Galadhrim Warriors with Elven blades
- 1 Galadhrim Warrior with banner
- Galadhrim Captain (armoured horse, Elven blade and shield)
- 4 Galadhrim knights with Elven blades and shields
- 2 Galadhrim knights with Elven blades, Elf bows and shields

This week we are trying a bigger game of LOTR, 500 points each to be precise. The aim is to play a one vs one game at this level and then have a 200 point each arena fight to the death over an objective.
I have two options for this, a Warriors of Minas Tirith list and a Galadhrim glittering host list. I could run a Mirkwood list by proxying my Galadhrim but I don't like doing that, nor will I field unpainted minis so my Rivendell and Mordor lists are out.
With the launch of Opus 3 for the Final Fantasy Trading Card Game I thought I'd have a search for a FFTCG themed podcast and I found this one, The Crystal Chroniclers. Their pilot episode was released last week and although they don't talk about the card game much they are embarking on a journey to play through all the mainline FF games and discuss their journey over the coming, presumably, years.

Just a quick update on my ebay challenge LOTR force...
I've broken my budget for July because I managed to bag a Finecast Sauron the Dark Lord for £12.25 – I wasn’t going to go for it but you very rarely get an on sprue finecast version and I didn’t want to let it slip away. This does however mean I’ve spent £27.08 this month leaving me with very little for August! That said, I now have Sauron…what else is needed?

I don't think Poe Dameron got enough screen time in TFA, I'm sure there is a fat stack of director’s cut material lying about somewhere explaining, amongst other things how he survived the TIE fighter crash, got off Jakku and got back to the Resistance in time to then lead a flight of X-wings in a rescue mission…As this is my opinion, I felt it was time that I put Poe on the table in an X-wing game. I've had the Heroes of the Resistance expansion for ages but haven't used either of the ships in anger. Being a bit ‘gamey’ I did my research - on the FFG website, not Reddit - and put together a Poe/Rey list that was pretty filthy with lots of synergies going on.

I'm a big fan of Final Fantasy, not a super fan but VII is still my all time favourite game and XIV is a fab MMO, I played VIII and IX growing up, I have the HD remake of X & X-2 on my Vita and whilst I enjoyed the XIIIs I did find they started to drag after a while. I'm currently playing XV which is very well put together but the lead character Noctus is doing my head in…so when I heard about a new FF themed card game I took notice.

We recently played a 700 point doubles game pitting Elves and Rohan vs Mordor and Harad. We drew up lists before hand, since I'd been busy painting Glorfindel and some High Elves I made them the core of my list. I had originally planned to include Erestor and more High Elves but I didn't get them done in time. Instead I took Gildor Inglorian and a troop of Noldorin Exiles, this was rather fortuitous as their 8” movement makes them handy on the Breakthrough mission we rolled.
Forces of Rivendell:
Glorfindel with Elven blades and armour of Gondolin
3 High Elves with Elven blades
2 High Elves with bows
3 Noldorin Exiles with bows
3 Noldorin Exiles with Elven blades and throwing daggers
2 Noldorin Exiles with Wood Elf Spears and throwing daggers
One of my pledges this year was to get some terrain sorted so my tables looked that bit more interesting. After much head scratching research I settled on some stuff from TT Combat, which is incidentally a local company. I've put together most of my kits and painted a few of them up, below are some pictures of them with my Algoryn Command Squad.

Last weekend was Geek Fest 3.0, Cornwall’s answer to ComicCon at Heartlands near Camborne. It's a weekend event with trade stands, prop and armour displays, CosPlay competitions and a demo area for tabletop games, board games and RPG sessions. It's a smallish event but was good fun.
One of the biggest obstacles for getting people into a new game is the upfront cost. Our hobby is not cheep and most of us (myself included) are not consistently flush with cash!
- If you want to get into 40k, you're looking at £100 minimum by the time you've bought the new starter box or a Start Collecting! box, Rulebook and codex.
- Infinity is about £60 for their 300 point sets
- Beyond the Gates of Antares is £50 for a starter army plus the Rulebook.
- Star Wars Armada is £75 + another £50 or so for a small fleet
- Halo Fleet Battles is one of the more reasonable, you can get a small fleet for a faction and the rules in their Ensign edition for £35 though the £70 starter box s much better value.

Last week we played a doubles 500 point battle using a custom scenario we made up on the night. Pippin, with an escort of Rangers has to escape the Haradrim and light a beacon on the far side of the table. (Why it had to be Pippin doing it we didn't really clarify but it seemed like a reasonable thing).
We played on a 6x4 with lots of forests and hedges. We set up a small settlement around the middle and two watch towers, one on the centre line and the other in the back corner, this is the location of the beacon.
Its been a good time hobby wise, I've been off on half term which has meant I've been able to get a fair bit done. Fresh from my trip to Triple Helix Wargames (where I bought my Kharadron Overlords) I sold my PHR fleet on eBay and used the proceeds to buy some MDF terrain from TTCombat. I ordered two Fantasy Watchtowers, some sci-if building pods, two sets of barricades, a generator, two Space Elf (think Eldar) landing pads and a set of Space Elf towers. The human stuff has arrived and looks great but I'm still waiting on the rest.
Terrain is a criminally overlooked aspect of the hobby and I'm going to make a bit of an effort to get some decent terrain sorted over the next year - I'm a grown up now, I'm beyond books and painted cereal boxes damnit!

I thought I'd put together a basic overview of the Algoryn Prosperate after my last article on Beyond the Gates of Antares. Please add any comments or recommendations in the box at the bottom of the article.
The Algoryn Prosperate have had a bit of a rough time of it over the years, being on the boundary of the Gharr Empire has led to frequent and brutal attacks on their society on a more-or-less consistent basis. In response to this ever present threat the Algoryn have developed a militaristic society where everyone knows how to fight.

I've just got back from my in-laws and a long awaited visit to TripleHelix Wargames in Westbury, because of how they operate I had to place my order earlier in the week, I'd been procrastinating for a long time but eventually settled on a basic core army from which I can expand as I go forward. To that end I now have in my possession an Endrinmaster, Arkanaught Frigate, Arkanaught Company and a trio of Endrinriggers.

A mate at my local gaming club got me into this after badgering me relentlessly for a few weeks. It's a sci-fi D10 game from Warlord Games and is essentially Bolt Action on steroids...and in space. The universe is very much still in its infancy but things are starting to take shape, I haven't delved too much into the background of the universe but essentially there are these warp gate-sequences things that various empires are fighting to take control of. It's a fairly standard premise but it's got enough flavour to it to make it stand out.
My recent post on the state of my 'to do list' made me realise a few things and the main one was that the High Elves were not going to get done. As such I made the decision to sell them. Luckily a mate was starting High Elves to play 3rd Edition and happily took them off me for a price we were both happy with. I'm glad that they're sort of staying in the family and I'll get to see how they turn out.

If I'm honest, I haven't done enough with Halo Fleet Battles at my local club, they seem to have a collective wariness towards space games that don't come with a Star Wars sound track (I backed Dropfleet Commander and that hasn't picked up locally either). Anyway, I still love it and am going to be making a more concerted effort in the coming months to play more and write a bit more coverage of the new releases.
First up is the long awaited Autumn-class frigate which arrived this week, this release marks a new trend for Spartan because they are releasing ships as single blister packs now, this is great because it not only allows you to pick and chose individual ships but it also cuts the price down and reduces the wastage - for example, you get 4 Orion Assault Carriers in their box, realistically I'm only ever going to use 2 so I'm paying for 2 ships I'm probably never going to use.
How they didn't get round to making this ship sooner I don't know, the clamour for them to do this has been incessant since the game was first announced. The model is beautifully rendered though smaller than I expected it's not appreciably bigger than the ubiquitous Marathon Heavy cruiser. It comes, for the first time in a release, with a trio of pelican boarding craft which is a nice touch.
Stats wise things are looking familiar, the base ship is 100 points whilst the X is 110. With a damage track of 6.6.3 is nothing to shout about but it does have Defence Array 2 and Titanium Armour 2 which gives it some additional survivability over the Marathon. The Autumn also has a unique special rule which lets you re roll miss (skull) results on the initial MAC shot. This is huge and means that the Autumn is basically always at Firepower Rating 5 for her MAC cannon. It is slower than the Marathon with speed 6"
With the revised rules for the Marathon making Valiant cruisers viable for once I did wonder where the Autumn would fit in, my first impressions are that it is definitely worth the extra5 points over the marathon but probably won't be usurping the Valiant anytime soon. It's special rule mean it would be brutal in a unit of 3 or in pairs with a Halbred Axe element sniping bigger ships from the back line.
I'm hoping to get this painted up in the next few days. I'm going to be running a demonstration at our regional geek-convention in July and have a mini-game in mind for it.
What are your thoughts on this new unit?

I recently took stock of everything I had going on at the moment and had a bit of a realisation - I have far too much stuff to do. In my office is an old passenger trunk, it's a hearty thing I got from an elderly neighbour a year or so ago, it is my 'project box' and contains all the stuff I still need to do, it's mostly full.
My current inventory stands at:
- Ultramarines - obviously! Lots of infantry (30+ models) a pair of Dreadnaughts and my Falchion Super Heavy tank needs finishing off.
- Raven Guard - I had a binge on them recently and now only an Assault Squad and then they're done. I'll post some pictures up soon.
- Night Lords - after the news that the next HH book is Angelus and my mate is set on a Dark Angels list I though it was time to put on my traitors cloak. I've drawn up a centurion list and have a pair of Terror squads, a volkite Support Squad, some Terminators and a big Tactical Squad to do.
GW Non Heresy:
- Space Marines - My Celestial lions have some tanks and a Dreadnaught that need finishing
- Eldar - 2 of the Start Collecting boxes, some Farseers and Eldrad plus a Cobra super heavy which I snapped up on eBay (pretty sure it's from Forge World China though)
- Harlequins - lots and lots of eBay purchases after the box game they put out - I've got just under 50 infantry and some skimmers to do. I think I've settled on a colour scheme of purple, black and gold I just need to get airbrushing.
- High Elves - too much to list
- Dark Elves - big blobs of Witch Elves and Black Guard plus a bolt Thrower and a cauldron of blood
- Shadow Wars - I've set on the Inquisition and have built up a warband, it's all primed I just need to get on with it.
- Halo Fleet Battles - My Orion heavy cruisers need detailing
- Beyond the Gates of Antares - I have an Algoryn army (I've got a draft article about the, somewhere) that has a few models to finish up.
- Infinity - the last few Aleph units
So yeah, quite a lot.

I had the pleasure of attend the Weekender 2017 and snapped up the event only Custodes guy as well as a copy of Inferno and a few other small bits and pieces. Overall I thought the event was good but I was a bit flat that there were know Thousand Sons goodies for sale...
I've been airbrushing for a couple of years now but this is the first time I've been able to get a permanent setup. Our new house has a garage and I've commandeered the back of it for hobby purposes. The airbrush is a Badger Patriot 105 and it's a solid bit of kit. I've had a few blockage issues but that is certainly down to me not cleaning it properly. At the moment it's running quite smoothly and I've been knocking out a few things in the past couple of weeks. Most notable some Night Lords and Algoryn army for Beyond the Gates of Antares...
More on both of those in the future!
Apparently it's a popular thing that I have not shown any interest in at all. However, since listening to podcasts like the Sons of Heresy and the Eye of Horus Podcast, neither of which are big on Twitter, I have felt the need to get involved.

I took time off working on various Heresy projects to have a stab at the new Ahriman model. I've always been taken by this guy's ignoble fall-from-grace backstory and the transformation he goes through in the post-Heresy years. Working with a different pallet was nice, the jet black of the Raven Guard was starting to grind me down.
